A nice page of pics at the drags including the unfortunate incident where a SHO waiting to turn into the drags was rear ended by a local.  Nobody hurt thank goodness.

A quick report:

Cars attending:  130+
People attending: 200+

We had great weather, people actually were reaching for a light jacket at the drags!  Only a bit of rain that didn't effect any events.

Summit Point was a blast.  Mason/Dixon Dragway was a lot of fun (Click here for a report from Tom Smith and his first time ever experience on a drag strip at the convention) and Harvey was the HERO!

The roads around Frederick were awesome, to use an overworked, but appropriate word.  Pick almost any road west, north or south and it was fun, smooth and led to historic sites/towns.

SHO Club thanks everyone that attended, everyone that donated to the Red Cross event (over $4000 raised!), everyone that helped us plan, and put on the event, it was a group effort that I hope allowed everyone helping to enjoy most of the convention.

Special thanks to Terri Huffnagle.  She was great to put up with my panic almost all of last year and helped with all events at the convention.

The LSHOC and MASHOC clubs are offering a neat CD of pictures of the convention, look here for forms to order this item.  They are also offering the neat golf shirt that convention committee members wore at the event.  Look for an order form for that on SHOclub.com also.

Much more later, I am leaving some of the old info below for those that don't know what we are talking about.

NEXT YEAR?  Looks like we will be "cheesy" and go to Wisconsin, we already have an event planned that you will love and have fun at.  Details this fall.

Don and Jan Mallinson
Ken and Jodie Mallinson and Ethan.

Below is a "review" of the convention from our good friend; Kerby Haltom from Ft. Worth, Texas.  (Smile when you say that pard!)

OK folks, put on your rant reading glasses for the first part, then it gets
better...

I'm not sure where to start on these Convention 2002 musings. Was it the big
ol' turtle in the road in east Texas, or the tornado chasing US in eastern
Arkansas that was the indicator of things to come? Actually, I think it was
the truck driver in eastern Tennessee that just about took the front end off of
my car that indicated the way the drive there and back would be. Thank God
for '96 front brakes and Carbotech pads!

Several rants I must make(and these are my opinions, and mine alone):
The vast majority of people in Virginia couldn't drive a car with help, and
shouldn't be allowed on the road.
I-81 should be immediately widened to 4 lanes. One lane for cars, one for
trucks and two for the Virginia State Highway Patrol. I gave up counting at 20
Trooper mobiles. Here in Texas that would be about 10 more than I would see
driving from Texarkana to El Paso. And that is damned near 1000 miles of
Interstate.
67 MPH is NOT hauling ass.
Why is West Virginia considered "backwards" when their speed limit is 70, and
Virginia's is 65?
"Customer Service" are two words never put anywhere near each other in a
sentence in Frederick, MD. The best service I got in that entire town was at
Roy Rodgers. Frankly, that's just sad. To quote Jack Nicholson as the
Joker "This town needs an enema!"
The night clerk at the Hampton Inn has no right to decide whether the fire
alarm is real or not. That is not her area of expertise. Call the damned Fire
Department and let them do their job. And send me some towels.

Now as for the convention itself. I had a blast. Thanks to all that were
involved. I know better than most what a royal pain putting on one of these
things is. It is hours/days/weeks of thankless hard work. So I want to make
it a little less thankless and say thank you, thank you, thank you.

Don, thank you for all of your work, while having major surgery and gong
through physical therapy. That was probably above and beyond, but not
unappreciated.

I finally got to put some faces with the names on this list. Ian Fisher, John
Hrinsin, et al. It was a pleasure meeting all of you in person, and I hope to
see all of you next year. From what it sounds like we should at least be able
to get some cheese! ;-)

Oh, and the evening clerk at the Baymont Inn in Brentwood, TN is cute, smart
and nice. I may need to go back...

Events:
Tuesday:
The annual car SHOw-
Shine up the SHO and go for the GOLD!   This will be a judged event as in the past.  Awards will be nice for Silver and Gold with certificates for Bronze winners.  The "Best of Generation" awards were introduced last year and are coveted. and the top award is the Best of SHOw/Judged.  We awarded a Best of SHOw by popular vote (new award this year).

Tech Session- At the host hotel, with SHO master Technician Kevin Mahoney of Protech Automotive in Gaithersburg, MD.  Think up your worst problems or modification questions.

Drive Through History-  We take a group drive on some great roads through the park-like and actual parks in the area, eat at a nice buffet restaurant and then drive back to the hotel as a group.  100+ cars participated.

Wednesday: Summit Point Race Track.  Click HERE to find out more about this great facility, a favorite of Brock Yates and the One Lap of America events.  Located in West Virginia, a short and interesting drive from our host hotel, it features ten turns and is 2.0 miles long.  We will run the main circuit in a lapping/school event that will give you over an hour of track time!  About 70 cars turned out for this event.

LATE Wednesday PM- About 100 of us drove to the Jug Bridge Restaurant to dive face first into a pile of Maryland Blue Crabs!  Other food was available.  A Great messy time was had by all.

Thursday: Mason-Dixon Dragway. Click HERE to read about this famous strip located near Hagerstown Maryland, in a neat valley right next to recreation facilities and just down the road from some of the best hand-dipped ice cream cones you can find.  Good track food, good track, and friendly people.  See what the SHO'l do!  The first SHO drag event in three years!  About 70 cars participated and had a great time.

Thursday evening- Our annual banquet had about 170 people for a nice buffet dinner, door prizes, awards, and our guest speaker, Pat Goss from Motorweek Television.  We also raised about $4500 (exact total coming soon) for the Red Cross.

Frederick, Maryland is located just up the road from SP Motorsports and Protech Automotive, the famous SHO businesses on the east coast in Gaithersburg.

You will be within a short drive of our nations capital, many national landmarks and civil war monuments and battlefields.  I have verified, in person, that the area is NOT congested and we will take you on some interesting and fun roads where you will get to exercise the SHO like it should be.

GREAT Roads to take on the way/when going home from #10

I will put information here about some great roads to take when going to or coming from the convention (or just when in the area).  If you know of others, let me know.

Tail of the Dragon in Western North Carolina off-site link, great road.

Route 311 in Virginia between Roanoke (on the Blue Ridge Parkway) and Interstate 64.  This road runs basically NNW, up and back down several peaks in the Appalachian and Allegheny mountain ranges. About a 50 mile drive that you should allow a couple of hours to take.  A guaranteed grin producer.

A registration form will be posted soon.
